Summary and Synthesis - Summarize and synthesize of the impact of recent experiences, ideas, and/or issues encountered on the Tuesdays and Thursdays in class thus far from your perspective.
Last week in class when we were discussing algorithms I feel that I have gained a new understanding on fully comprehending a subject matter. When Dr. Reins had us come up with our own algorithm and test it our to see if it worked on all of the different polygons I feel that, that helped me become more independent when trying to figure out math problems. Now I feel that if I can teach that to my students I can help them to become better at math or any subject. They just need to sit down and take some time to fully understand the problem, figure out what they know and then decide what they need to do to figure out the answer to the problem.

I would say so far the biggest eye opener for me is interpreting national and state standards. This may sound odd at first, but just bear with me. Initially when we first started learning about how to break down standards, I was upset. Yes I know, sounds strange, but I was not upset with the fact that we were learning the standards. I was/am upset with the fact that I am in my 5th year of school and this is the first time I've ever learned where to go if I need help interpreting. I think everyone could agree that standards play a huge role in our education system, so why did we wait till now to give us all of this incredibly important information? While studying on how to break down standards, I've learned that words are most certainly not what they seem. Most of the time they have many more defintions within the word because each word is loaded with meaning. So when you look at a word, if you don't know the math terminlogy, than you're going to need some help. Intimidating? I would say so. That is where looking at other sources for help comes into play. Dont get me wrong, I would much rather learn this now ...instead of getting in the teaching field and realizing I really have no idea what a standard means. Glad we are actually LEARNING something in our methods class =)
